Failed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams told MSNBC’s Joy Reid on “AM Joy” on Sunday that Georgia’s Heartbeat Bill is “abominable and evil.”
“We have to be a state that is not only friendly to businesses; we’ve got to be friendly to the women who work in businesses,” said Abrams, referencing Georgia’s booming film industry.
“You should not have to worry about your ability to control your bodily autonomy because the governor has pushed such an abominable and evil bill that is so restrictive,” Abrams added.
“[The Heartbeat Bill] is not only bad for morality and our humanity, it’s bad for business,” she concluded, also adding that she does not support actor Alyssa Milano’s calls for the entertainment industry to boycott the state.
Host Joy Reid proffered that “people are pretty appalled” by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp having signed the Heartbeat Bill.
Kemp, of course, has not yet signed the bill, though he is expected to do so prior to the May 12 deadline.
“We don’t have any plans regarding timing of signing of the heartbeat bill,” said the governor’s press secretary Cody Hall on Monday, as reported by USA Today last week.
Georgia legislators passed H.B. 481, “Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act” on March 29. It is described as one of the country’s most restrictive abortion bills to date.
The bill would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically around six weeks’ gestation–often before women know they are pregnant.
Exceptions to the ban include medical emergencies, pregnancies considered “medically futile” meaning that they are “incompatible with sustaining life after birth,” and pregnancies that are the result of rape or incest.
